How to Vegan, Reviews

TMG Reviews: The Hogtown Vegan

We love eating food. Breakfast foods, fried foods, healthy foods and all the foods in between. However there is probably no food we like more than some delicious comfort food. Comfort food is called that for a reason; it’s comforting! We honestly never feel better than when we have delicious comfort food enjoyed over a great movie.

If you live in Toronto chances are you know what The Hogtown Vegan is, whether you are vegan or not. A restaurant that has taken the vegan scene by storm because of its delicious southern-inspired dishes. From dishes like Unchicken and Waffles to a vegan Pulled Pork, we have tried nearly everything on their menu and it is all delicious. You can see our full video review here

We recently took a quick walk over to Hogtown to use their take-out service for some delicious movie-watching food. We aimed to get dishes we have yet to have and maybe would not normally get to see if they are as delicious as their other dishes. We ended up getting their Vegan Wings (both in buffalo and bbq sauces), Shiitake Fried Clams, Phish n’ Chips and Philly Cheesesteak. (We know, we are drooling as we write this too)

Let’s start with the appetizers; Vegan Wings and Shiitake Fried Clams. Let’s start by saying both were delicious, however we did have a strong love for their Buffalo Wings. Their wings are a little different than most you would find a restaurants. Often we would see cauliflower wings on menus, while Hogtown makes theirs from soy. They offer a nice “meaty” texture that sometimes you miss from cauliflower wings. Their Shiitake Fried Clams are also delicious, especially paired with their chipotle-ranch dipping sauce, however we don’t know if they taste a lot like clams. You can never go wrong with some delicious fried food.

There is a lot to say about the two entrees, Phish n’ Chips and Philly Cheesesteak, that we ordered. But you can sum it up in five words: holy crap this is delicious. We were completely obsessed with the batter on the phish, so much so that we were just eating the batter by the end. We know, we’re gross. However we were completely shocked by the deliciousness that was their Philly Cheesesteak. Something that both of us said we probably wouldn’t normally order but we are so glad we did. The vegan cheese sauce paired with the perfectly textured saitan makes for one of the most delicious sandwiches we have ever had.

If you can’t tell, we love The Hogtown Vegan.
