Hot Chocolate Two Ways

It’s about halfway through December which means it is good and cold now. It’s that lovely time of year where you can look out the window to beautiful winter scenery and step outside and immediately regret it. As much as I (Kat) am a winter person, for some reason I always forget how cold in can get up in here in Canada. Good thing I love sweaters and cozy socks… and HOT CHOCOLATE! But who doesn’t love hot chocolate?!

Hot chocolate is one of those signature Fall and Winter drinks. The perfect drink to cuddle up on the couch with to the sweet sound of holiday music in the glow of the Christmas tree. Anybody else love to do this? Just me? I get it, I am a little bit holiday crazy. Ask Devin, she’ll agree with that statement.

A few weeks ago we had a poll going on our Instagram stories (if you don’t follow us on our Instagram account you can by going here) asking you guys to vote on which hot chocolate recipe you wanted from us; vegan nutella hot chocolate or spicy hot chocolate. Originally you voted for the vegan nutella hot chocolate but we just couldn’t hold the amazing spicy hot chocolate back from you, so we gave you both! After all, it is the holidays and it’s the season all about generosity.

This nutella hot chocolate is super decadent and rich, which means it also makes the perfect dessert! Especially when you top it with some coconut whipped cream and crushed hazelnuts. While the spicy hot chocolate is the perfect opposite to that. With the perfect amount of spice and sweet, this is the perfect drink on a cold winter day.

Vegan “Nutella” Hot Chocolate

Serves: 2

Ingredients:

  • 2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder, heaping
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup, heaping
  • 2 tbsp vegan hazelnut spread, heaping (We used Nutivia, which you can buy here.)

Instructions:

  1. Add your milk, cacao powder, maple syrup and hazelnut spread to your stovetop milk frother (you can buy one by clicking the country of your orgin: canada or usa). Using a whisk mix for about 5 minutes, or until everything has dissolved into your milk and it is one consistency.
  2. Transfer that to your stove on medium-low heat and heat for about 5 minutes or until the milk has been heated through. Be sure to consistently whisk your milk to avoid any burning.
  3. Finally place the lid on your milk frother and froth for about 5-10 minutes. The time will depend on the milk you use, almond and soy froth the best but it also depends on the brand you choose as well.
  4. Pour into your mugs and top with some vegan marshmallows, coconut whipped cream, melted dark chocolate and chopped hazelnuts.
