One of our personal favourite snacks is popcorn. It’s easy to make, affordable, and customizable. Whether it’s a movie night or for a work snack, these popcorn seasonings are a great way to spruce up a healthy snack.

Whether you’re looking for something sweet or savoury, popcorn is the perfect vessel and we’ve got 6 simple seasoning recipes including ranch, taco, cinnamon-sugar, salt n’ vinegar, chili cheese, and curry. Plus each recipe works for about 4 cups of popped popcorn.

Top tips for making the perfect stove-top popcorn:

  • Use a heavy bottomed pot for best results. Cheaper, thin pots don’t distribute heat evenly. It’s best to use something with a thicker, heavy bottom. However, having said that we have used cheaper pots and it works, you just have to watch it more carefully.
  • Keep the heat low. Cranking the heat too high doesn’t speed up the popping, it just burns the kernels and no one likes burnt popcorn. Best to stay on a medium-low heat.
  • Use a little bit of coconut oil. Use about a tbsp of coconut oil per 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels for best results and a delicious flavour.
  • Test the heat. Before adding all your kernels to your pot, add a couple first to test to make sure the heat is right.
  • Shake, shake, shake to avoid burning. Keep the kernels moving in the pot to avoid any burnt kernels.
  • Allow air to escape the pot. Keep the lid of your pot a little ajar when not shaking so that the steam can escape and the kernels don’t steam. Steamed kernels loose their crispiness.
  • Remove from the heat when the popping slows to about 2-3 seconds. Once your popping is no longer rapid and has slowed to about 2-3 seconds between pops you should remove it from the heat and put in a bowl.

Ingredients

Ranch Seasoning

  • 1 tbsp dillweed
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp melted coconut oil

Taco Seasoning

  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp hot chili powder
  • 1 tbsp sriracha
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

Cinnamon Sugar Seasoning

  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp cane sugar
  • 1 tsp melted coconut oil

Salt n' Vinegar Seasoning

  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt

Chili 'Cheese' Seasoning

  • 1 tsp melted coconut oil
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast

Curry Seasoning

  • 1 tsp melted coconut oil
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp finely chopped cilantro
